Utz reviews Book on the History of First Professorship in English on European Continent

Richard Utz recently reviewed Renate Haas and Albert Hamm's The University of Strasbourg and the Foundation of Continental English Studies.  A Contribution to an European History of English Studies (Frankfurt: Peter Lang, 2009) for Prolepsis: The Heidelberg Review of English Studies.

Volunteers Needed For Museum Tours

Calling all WMU alumni, retirees, and students (grad or advanced undergrad): Interested in a unique opportunity to develop public speaking/communications skills, serve Kalamazoo Public School youth and train to lead a tour through the RACE exhibit when it arrives in Kalamazoo this Fall?

Professor Kristina Wirtz's Fall 2010 service-learning course, Anth 5030: Anthropology in the Community, will be recruiting a pool of volunteer support guides for museum tours. The volunteer support guides will provide support to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in Anthro 5030, who will be training to assist classes of Kalamazoo Public School (KPS) students touring the Kalamazoo Valley Museum's RACE exhibit starting in October 2010. All volunteer support guides will have a unique opportunity to work with KPS administrators and teachers, WMU faculty, students and staff, and will have special opportunities to participate in intensive trainings and workshops in cultural anthropology and service learning.

The requirements for support guides include a background check form (required by KPS), and availability for the following times/activities:

Tuesday/Thursdays 10:00-11:30am (for group trainings in September)
At least five mornings total 8:30am-11am (M-F between October and early December)
Attend one weekend evening retreat 3-10PM in early September
Attend an educators open house on Friday, October 1 (1-6pm).

Total time commitment over the entire Fall 2010 semester: 35-40 hours.

New Issues Launches Redesigned Website

New Issues spent the last year redesigning and updating their large and heavily-visited website. Alex Aivars, Coordinator of the Web for the College of Arts and Sciences provided the design and structure. Laura Zawistowski and Shana Wolstein, Spring 2010 interns, and Marianne Swierenga, Managing Editor, transfered and updated all the information to the new site.
