Becky De Oliveira has won the College of Arts and Sciences Diversity and Inclusion Student Essay Award for 2012-2013. The winning essay, "
GIVE ME LIBERTY: From Quiet Optimism to Loud Discontent in Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl," examines Harriet Jacobs's various strategies of resistance to slavery. The awards committee was "impressed by the quality" of her essay and expressed pride in having her as a member of the college. De Oliveira is pursuing a PhD in the department's English Education program and wrote the essay as her final project for a Fall 2012 class on slavery.
